Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896)
Biography
Sir Henry parkes was born on the 27th of may 1815 in Warickshire, England he was the youngest of 7 children. Forced off their farm in 1823 by debt, the Parkes family moved to Glamorganshire and about 1825 settled in Birmingham.Henry went to Stoneleigh Parish school.On 11 July 1836 at Edgbaston Parish Church he had married Clarinda, he was premier of New south wales 5 times
Cirumstances of immigration
In 1839 parkes and his wife migrated to New south wales by boat they reached sydney on the 25th of July 1839.
How he impacted Australias history
From the 1860s on, Parkes talked to people about the states joining together . He was president of a
meeting in 1891 to plan a set of rules for a federated Australia. While this plan was not chosen, it was used later as a model for the final version. Parkes has been called 'The father of Australian federation'. His idea was rejected and after he died Sir Edmund Barton supported federation and finally Australia federated in 1901 and he became Australias first Prime Minister.The reason that federation happened was because Western Australia did not vot the first time and when they did vote most voted for federation.
